Austin Black

Leadership Council

"It is a call for black people in this country to unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations. "
 - Stokely Carmichael

The Austin Black Leadership Council is a new initiative formed under the umbrella of Austin Justice Coalition to help ensure the voice and the position of the city's African-American community are clearly heard on issues we find important.

Our plan is to strongly and collectively advocate for issues we feel are of  primary importance to our community and to lend our voice in support of other issues and organizations, where our interests intercept.

The main goals of this initiative include, but are not limited to, the following:

•  To foster better working relationships between Black orginizations and black leadership in Austin.

• To adopt a platform on issues of importance to Austin’s African-American Community.

• Once drafted, platform will be forwarded to elected officials, and the media.  It will also be posted online, with back-up literature for everyone to read and understand.

• The position of Austin Black Leadership Council will be clearly communicated on key issues.

• Help us bring our issues and concerns to the forefront.

• To learn about and discuss Austin/ Greater Austin issues and then be prepared to do something, feasible, about them.

•  We’ll lobby for and support our issues during the 2017 legislative session.
